#6th

Mrs. Hickman's 6th grade class has been diving deep when it comes to improving their writing skills. Students have covered narrative, persuasive, and are currently working their way through research topics and essays. We are learning that although we may have strong opinions, we must provide backing for those opinions and using textual evidence and facts are very important!

Outside of writing, reading has been showing great strides in grade 6. The 6th grade is currently boasting 1,318 cumulative Accelerated Reader points on the year. This is huge and shows that our kids have books in their hands and are reading! 6th grade students have completed four novel studies and are currently working their way through their fifth. The class has read a variety of texts with themes ranging from survival and friendship to suspense, environmentalism, growing up, and the power of persistence. Novel studies covered this year are as follows: Freak the Mighty, Skeleton Creek, Ghost in the Machine, Brian's Winter, and Hoot. While the class has enjoyed all books covered thus far, Ghost in the Machine was voted in as the overwhelming favorite. Students have stated Ghost in the Machine was, "scary, but fun!" and "the videos that went with the book sent the story over the top - they were so scary!" Reading has been fun this year in 6th grade and we are looking to keep that excitement going.

As the year continues, the focus will be on continuing to get 6th grade ready for Junior High and upcoming MAP testing. Our students are working hard, having fun, and looking forward to a positive finish to their final year in elementary!
