Greenfield High School partnered with Luke Spain, Cox Health Injury Prevention Coordinator, Cox EMS, Cox Flight Crew, the Greenfield Police Department, Dade County Sheriff's Department, Dade County 911 & Emergency Management, Greenfield Fire Department, the Dade County Coroner, Greenfield Funeral Home, and Wreck-o-Mended to host a docudrama on Wednesday, April 9th to demonstrate the effects of drunk driving to our high school students. This was an all hands on deck situation and our community came together to show the true power of teamwork.
“Sonie, our counselor, and I along with our administrators really wanted to do this docudrama before prom and summer break to really emphasize how the choices that they make during these fun times can impact their lives and the lives of their friends and families forever.” Natasha Myers, nurse for Greenfield School District.
The docudrama which involved a two-car crash, an on-scene fatality, car extraction, on scene resuscitation and other life-like medical interventions, an altercation between the “drunk driver” and surviving occupants of the other vehicle, leading to a couple of arrests and ending with a lifeline air evacuation and a terrified and emotional mother arriving on scene created a powerful scene for our students putting into action a realistic and eye-opening visualization of the life-altering consequences of the actions of one of our own students choices. This was followed with the “Crash Course” assembly by Luke Spain with Cox Injury Prevention.
High School Counselor Sonie Walker hopes that in addition to providing an important lesson this also cultivates interest in our students by giving them a real life look at possible future career choices in Medical EMS, Law Enforcement and Fire Rescue.
We are so proud of our students who did a phenomenal job at bringing the scene to life with their acting skills. The students who participated were Seniors: Austin Pickett, Jaxin Knotts, Devin Steeley, Juniors: Haddie Hayes and Guerin Brown, and Sophomores: Addisyn Myers and Briar Wallen.
Favorite quotes from students after the docudrama:
“It really opened my eyes and made me realize that this could happen to any of us,” Senior student.
“It seemed so real. You hear about things like this, but seeing it really made it real,” Freshman student.
“Seeing this happen to friends is so bad, even though I know it wasn’t real, it felt real,” Senior student.
We would like to thank everyone who came together to make this happen, as well as Andy Miller with the City of Greenfield for helping clean up after us.
