Greenfield 7th and 8th graders are creating their own poems in Mrs. Burton’s English Language Arts classes. Students are writing and editing fourteen types of poetry, one per day. This allows students to practice their writing skills while being creative. Students learn the aspects of each poem type, discuss figurative language, and see several examples before beginning their own. Then students practice their keyboarding and editing skills by typing their poems on their Chromebooks with assistance from Mrs. Burton.
The fourteen poems include haiku, tanka, cinquain, diamante, acrostic, limerick, short rhyme, long rhyme, short free verse, long free verse, shape poem, biopoem, personal poem, and growing up poem. The best poems will be entered in the upcoming LAD of Southwest Missouri Fair this spring and the Creative Communication contest.
