Fifth graders just finished reviewing grammar skills, such as parts of speech, punctuation, and capitalization. While reading Summer of the Monkeys, we learned to summarize our reading. Now we are reading Holes and doing creative writing responses. We also do daily grammar practice for our bell ringer assignments and are working toward our individualized AR goals while learning to monitor our own progress.
In history we just finished learning about landforms and early Americans. Now we are reading about the early explorers. We’re concentrating this year on reading maps and making both personal and societal connections to the history lessons. Our next history subject is learning about the thirteen original colonies.
