Elementary students in Leslie Farley's class recently had the opportunity to study one of the most famous shipwrecks in history. The unit focused on the the RMS Titanic, the famous ship that hit an iceberg on its maiden voyage in the North Atlantic Ocean. Setting sail in 1912, the ship was said to be unsinkable and was the largest ship in use at the time of its first voyage. Of the 2,200 estimated passengers, more than 1,500 died when the ship sunk to the bottom of the ocean.
Mrs. Farley's class learned these fascinating facts and many more during the unit. Student research on the Titanic required them to read many books, create posters and research booklets on the ship. Once research was completed, students presented the information to their classmates. With this unit being very popular with Mrs. Farley's students, she plans on creating similar units in the future, hoping to further engage her students in history.
